William Schubert |
Dr. William Schubert has had a long and productive history as a loyal member of the Trojan Family. He is a native Californian, born and raised in Los Angeles. After serving his country in World War II as an army medic, he attended USC as an undergraduate, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology in 1950. He entered the USC School of Medicine immediately thereafter, graduating in 1954. His late wife, Inez Rowsey Schubert, earned both her undergraduate degree in music and a doctorate in education from USC. Mrs. Schubert taught the music education program to an entire generation of elementary credential candidates at California State University, Los Angeles. In other words, she taught the teachers how to teach music. She was also a great Trojan booster.
Dr. Schubert has practiced family medicine in the La Canada Flintridge area for over fifty years and is still going strong! He was affiliated with the School of Medicine as a clinical professor of family medicine, and served on the committee that developed family practice post-graduate courses for the Keck School of Medicine. He has been an active member of the Salerni Collegium, which is a medical school support group that provides programs for the benefit of USC medical students. He served as president of the Salerni Collegium in 1995. Dr. Schubert has also been the class agent for the class of 1954, and is actively involved in organizing yearly class reunions. Dr. Schubert loves travel, Trojan football and is also a classic car enthusiast. Dr. Schubert is also a newlywed and married Gloria Vessadini on December 27th, 2007.
Recently, Dr. Schubert gave a generous gift to the Keck School of Medicine, and he has since discovered that certain gifts can simultaneously provide great benefits for both the donor and the university. Dr. Schubert acquired a USC charitable gift annuity. The annuity will pay Dr. Schubert a guaranteed, fixed income at a favorable rate for the rest of his life! Because Dr. Schubert used highly appreciated stocks to purchase his annuity, he bypassed some of the capital gains taxes that he would have paid had he sold the stocks and realized the income. He also received a significant charitable tax deduction for his generous gift. Dr. Schubert says “I like supporting the university, especially the medical school. It is nice that they make giving so easy with charitable gift annuities.”
